Murli hit’s the bull’s-eye

He came, he played, he conquered and left us all astonished! Muttiah Muralitharan, the spin wizard has broken all records and created an insurmountable new one instead – 800 wickets in test cricket. The legendary bowler’s retirement from international test cricket came at the peak of his career. Ever since he started playing his first international cricket in 1992, Murali has never looked back.

Murali was just 8 wickets away from creating the record when he played his last test against India. The Indian batsmen who fell prey to Murali’s magic were Tendulkar, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Ojha and Mithun in the first inning and the next one had Yuviraj, Bhajji and Ojha.

Being the highest wicket-taker in both – test and international – form of the game, Murali has fruitfully gained 800 and 515 wickets, respectively. He also holds the record of being the only player to take 1,000 wickets, combined in both form of the game.

He maintains the track record of the 67th 5-wicket haul in an innings in test cricket. He also holds the maximum 10-wickets in 22 matches. His consistent performance assured him wickets. He has received many accolades for his feats in the 22-yard pitch. The most important one being the Wisden Award. He was adjudged the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World in 2000 and 2006.

He has mastered the off-break and top spin. And he became lethal ever since he developed the doosra.

Along with his bowling tactics, Murali is also famous for his unorthodox and adventurous batting style. At the same time, he also holds the record for most ducks (59) ever in all forms of international cricket, including the T20s. His aura is such that the moment he comes on to the pitch, whether bowling or batting, the spectators anticipate a good game. He also attracts the attention of television audience all around world.

The spin magician managed to keep his performance undisturbed in spite of the controversies about his bowling action. And he proved the abhorrers wrong when he passed the computer test of his action, down under at the University of South Australia. His love for the game and hunger for success has helped him in reaching the pinnacle.

In his 18-year career, Murali has won matches single-handedly for the Sri Lanka. His retirement from test cricket is not much of loss to his fans, as he will still reign in the other two forms of the game, i.e. T20 and ODI with his magical spin technique.

Murali’s lifetime performance has made a mark on every cricket lover. He has managed to sweep them off their feet. There is little chances of the record of 800 wickets being broken. And one thing is sure that there can never be another Muttiah Muralitharan in the cricketing arena.
